What is a nerd?

Updated: Sep 6, 2021

"Nerd" is often considered a derogatory term, synonymous with "geek", "dweeb", and "weirdo". But is it really bad to be a nerd? After all, this entire website is devoted to nerdiness!

Many dictionaries have two definitions for "nerd". They say that a "nerd" is someone who is socially awkward, and someone who is single-minded or very knowledgeable in one subject, hobby, or pursuit. Now that second definition isn't necessarily bad, and is actually very similar to the definition of "expert", but the first definition gives "nerd" a terrible connotation.

I believe everyone is a nerd, according to the second definition. Everyone has their own passions and interests that make them experts in certain areas, such as geography, snacks, or 20th century weaponry. Those are just a few examples of the infinite range of things that someone can be nerdy about. Many people are nerdy about their job, whether it's at Chik-fil-a or at Apple! Others are nerdy about hobbies, such as baking or painting, or about toys, such as Legos or drones. Everyone is a nerd.

Does this mean everyone is a socially awkward dweeb? Of course not! And if someone tries to insult you by calling you a "nerd" or "geek", then they're bullies who don't realize that they themselves are also nerds. Don't be offended by being called a "nerd", but take pride in your nerdiness! Together, we can change the definition of "nerd" from an insult to a compliment!
