May the Fourth be with you!

Updated: Apr 26, 2022

Today is Star Wars Day! But how has this fantastic day come to exist? What is its history?

Of course, this day exists to celebrate Star Wars, and so the history of Star Wars is tied into the history of this holiday. The first Star Wars movie was released in 1977, and it featured the phrase "May the Force be with you." The pun is obvious. "May the Fourth be with you" was first used on May 4, 1979, to congratulate Margaret Thatcher on becoming the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

This pun soon became more popular, but May 4 didn't officially become Star Wars Day until 2011, when the first organized celebration of the holiday took place in Toronto. Since then, Star Wars Day has been observed every May 4 all around the globe.

Disney, which owns Star Wars, began observing Star Wars Day in 2013. Disney used its streaming platform, Disney+, to celebrate Star Wars Day in both 2020 and 2021. In 2020, the finale of The Clone Wars, The Rise of Skywalker, and Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian were all made available on Disney+ on May 4. Today, Star Wars: The Bad Batch premiered on Disney+.

People all over the world celebrate Star Wars Day in their own unique ways. In 2015, people off the world celebrated it as well! Astronauts in the International Space Station watched Star Wars movies on May 4, 2015.

Don't worry, you don't have to go to the International Space Station or release something on Disney+ in order to celebrate Star Wars Day. Whether you wear a Star War t-shirt, like I am right now, or watch some Star Wars movies and TV shows, or make Star Wars cookies, you can observe this great holiday wherever you are.

So don't be shy. Celebrate Star Wars Day today and every May 4!

And May the Fourth be with you!
